Collected Character Prompts: April 2023

Every Wednesday I post a character writing prompt on Instagram @aurora_a_hurd . Here are the prompts from April! Prompt 27: How does your character handle being alone?  Is it their favorite way to be or do they get bored? Prompt 28: How would your character react to someone making a bad pun?  Or would they be the one making the pun? Prompt 29: Are there tropes your character falls into?  How can you play with and expand those into something unique? ~ A resource: https://tvtropes.org/ Prompt 30: Choose one of your secondary characters and write their perspective  of the main character(s). Is it positive? Negative? Indifferent?

Speculative Fiction Reading Group: A Wizard of Earthsea

I am once more working with ScribLab, this time bringing something a little different - a reading group!  You can sign up here and I have copied the details below . If well attended, I will be doing more of these reading groups in the future. The Speculative Fiction Reading Group is led by Aurora Hurd and is open to all - those brand new to the speculative fiction umbrella of genres and those who are long-time readers/writers. While there will be an exploration of craft elements, the goal first and foremost is to enjoy these stories.  Stories will be chosen in a rotation between works by authors who identify in the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, authors of color, and women authors. The group will explore classics of speculative fiction as well as the current boom in works by diverse authors. To prepare for each meeting: Read the book of the month. Keep the following question in mind: Was there a particular piece of writing craft (character building, description, pacing, etc) that stood out to you

It's time for another Speculative Fiction Crash Course!

I will be running my Speculative Fiction Crash Course once more through Scrib Lab ! When? Sunday, April 24th, 2pm-3:30pm Eastern Where? Online via Zoom Workshop Description:  What is speculative fiction, anyway? How does one go about writing the fantastic? And why is it important? In this exciting workshop, we'll answer these questions by looking at key elements of craft, examining what this grouping of genres encompasses, and discovering the history and influences upon it. There will be prompts and time to write in class so students can explore speculative writing for themselves. Click here to sign up!
